Zoom in on Grays Ferry

This neighborhood gets its name from George Gray, who operated a ferry in the 18th century that crossed from what is now Grays Ferry to Philadelphia proper. He also ran Gray’s Inn and Gray’s Garden (later known as Gray’s Tavern), which hosted many famous historical figures—including the very first president of the United States, George Washington himself. History is still alive and well in this neighborhood today, as the James Alcorn School, Anthony Wayne School, Charles Y. Aundenried Junior High School, University Avenue Bridge, Grays Road Recreation Center, and James McCann Foundation are all on the National Register of Historic Places.
